The Weather

This term our topic is “The Weather”.  As we’d had a little snow this weekend we began this week looking at snow.

SNOW

We started off making snow playdough.  This must be one of the easiest recipes I’ve ever used.  It’s no cook and takes about 10 minutes to make.

Snow playdough ingredients:

          2 cups of flour

          1 ½ cup salt

          2 tablespoons cream of tartar

          2 tablespoons vegetable oil

          1 ½ cups boiling water

          Glitter (optional)

Method:

Pour the flour, salt and cream of tartar into a bowl and mix.  If you want to add glitter do that now – any amount that you think is enough.  I ran out of silver glitter so used some gold.  This gave the white playdough a lovely sparkle.

Next add the oil and mix a little (the mixture will be a little clumpy and floury)

An adult should add the boiling water and stir it all together.  Within about 2 minutes the children can join in again mixing with spoons.  When the flour has all mixed in the children can use their hands to make the mixture into dough.

Store in a Tupperware container.

The children used scales, carboard boxes (as ovens) and baking trays together with scissors, cutters, rolling pins and other playdough equipment to manipulate the dough.  We talked about how snow looks and feels, what it's made from and where it comes from.

Autumn

Is a great time of year with so many colours, lots of animal activity and lots of learning opportunities for children.

Here we set up an Autumn interest table.  One of our lovely dads cut a leaf out of wood for us and the children coloured it in with felt tip pens.  We use some of our mud kitchen utensils to help sort the leaves, pine cones, conkers, sticks and other natureal objects that we found on a recent nature hunt.

These items can be compared, sorted into groups or colours, counted, made into pictures, felt, smelt, looked at and just investigated.
